Wantagh (pronounced /WAHN-taw/) is a hamlet that consists of two census-designated places in Nassau County, New York, United States. The portion of Wantagh that is north of Jerusalem Avenue is considered North Wantagh, and the portion south of Jerusalem Avenue is considered just Wantagh or sometimes even "South" Wantagh.

Wantagh is in the southeastern part of the Town of Hempstead. It serves as a suburb of New York City on Long Island. The city is easily accessible through roads and commuter rail.

The population of Wantagh was 18,971, with a combined North and South population of 31,127 at the time of the 2000 census .

Jones Beach State Park is located in Wantagh, making it known as "The Gateway to Jones Beach" .

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.1 square miles (10.7 km²), of which, 3.8 square miles (9.9 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²) of it (7.25%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusAmerican FactFinder. United States Census Bureau. Retrieved on 2008-01-31. of 2000, there were 18,971 people, 6,179 households, and 5,215 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 4,936.3 per square mile (1,907.5/km²). There were 6,250 housing units at an average density of 1,626.3/sq mi (628.4/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 96.75% White, 0.20% Black or African American, 0.04% Native American, 1.89% Asian, 0.34% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.26% of the population.

There were 6,179 households out of which 41.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.8% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 15.6% were non-families. 13.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.06 and the average family size was 3.37.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $83,916, and the median income for a family was $91,019. Males had a median income of $61,162 versus $40,403 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $31,817. About 1.2% of families and 1.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.1% of those under age 18 and 1.9% of those age 65 or over.

Wantagh is patrolled by the First, Seventh, and Eighth precincts of the Nassau County Police Department.

WFD

Wantagh is protected by a volunteer fire department that is responsible for one of the largest fire districts in Nassau County covering 12 square miles. The Wantagh Fire Department has approximately 225 members using 18 pieces of apparatus located throughout seven stations.

Jones Beach State Park is located within the departments jurisdiction, during large gatherings the WFD deploys various apparatus and its new mobile command center.

WLVAC

Wantagh-Levittown Volunteer Ambulance Corps has been serving the community since 1956, the all volunteer paramedic and EMT unit is located at 3702 Hempstead Tpke, Levittown.

Wantagh is known throughout Long Island to have a very energetic and vibrant nightlife. Centered around the Wantagh Long Island Rail Road Station there are nine bars, pubs, and clubs all within a quarter mile of the station. Last call in New York State is 4 a.m. thus keeping the area very active into early morning hours.

Wantagh is home to Mulcahy's Pub and Music Hall. This large establishment hosts live music Wednesday to Saturday from local to nationally known bands.

  • The 2001 World Championships in tether car racing where held at the Wantagh Tether Car Speedway which is located within Cedar Creek Park.
  • The highest recorded temperature was 103°F in 1999.
  • During the month of August in 1954 a United States Air Force fighter while traveling from Delaware to Massachusetts crashed into the middle of the street on Denver Road in Wantagh. The crash and ensuing fire damaged several homes on Denver Road, Dover Road and Roxbury Avenue.
  • JFK made a whistlestop tour during the 1960 presidential campaign and spoke to a large crowd at the Wantagh railroad station.
  • Wantagh's famous 4th of July Parade and celebration was in a Life Magazine feature article July 6, 1962.
  • The Long Island Marathon goes through Wantagh along Wantagh State Parkway as it heads to Sunrise Highway and back to East Meadow.
  • The Wantagh WaveRunners was the first ever tournament softball team in Wantagh, started in summer 2007.
